Preparation in the skills of social science inquiry prepares students to engage in rational decision-making as both an individual and as a citizen (ISBE). Students who learn about political systems, economics, history, geography, and social systems are also better prepared for state tests, either the ISAT or the PSAE. Reading and comprehending Social Studies prepares students to make inferences, demonstrate vocabulary skills, and analyze maps, charts, and graphs. As a district we realize that:

·    In the social sciences, students must read to learn.

·    Teachers of social science do not need to be reading specialists to help ensure that no student is left behind. Teachers can make a difference by recognizing social studies-specific reading difficulties and by teaching strategies designed to overcome them.
