Board of Education

The mission of the Peoria Public Schools, the cornerstone of academic excellence and the unifying force of our diverse community, is to ensure that each student reaches his or her full academic and personal potential and is a well-balanced citizen through an educational approach characterized by: continuously redefining teaching and learning, optimizing technology to transform the system, providing safe and nurturing environments, engaging and enabling families, effecting community partnerships, embracing and honoring all aspects of diversity, and guaranteeing professional staff who are committed to students.

Regular Board of Education meetings are broadcast on Channel 17.

Unless otherwise noted, committee meetings are held in the Superintendent's Conference Room.

Dr. David Gorenz was elected by the voters of District 3 to the Board in 2005. Dr. Gorenz currently serves the Board as President. A graduate of Richwoods High School, he is a physician and is an Assistant Administrator at OSF-Saint Francis Medical Center. Dr. Gorenz and his wife have three children who graduated from Peoria Public Schools. He also serves as Chairman of the Strategic Communications Committee and Chairman of the Committee of the Whole.  His term expires in 2010.


Martha M. Ross

Mrs. Ross was appointed to the District 150 Board of Education prior to being elected to the Board from District 1 in 2003. She currently serves the Board as Vice President. Mrs. Ross is the business owner of “The Bottom Line Design,” specializing in training, consulting, counseling and legal services. Mrs. Ross’ three children and four of her grandchildren attended District 150 schools. Mrs. Ross serves as the Chairperson of the Parent Teacher Advisory Committee and is on the Strategic Communications Committee. Her term expires in 2013.


Linda Butler

The Rev. Linda Butler has lived in Peoria all her life. She comes from a family of 12 siblings. Rev. Butler attended Peoria public schools and has a Bachelor of Science Degree from Bradley University. She spent 20 years in community relations and public affairs for WPEO Radio. Rev. Butler is certified in clinical pastoral care. Currently she is a chaplain and director of a homeless shelter at the South Side Mission in Peoria. For 25 years she has been actively involved with the community through various events and organizations. Her community work has been recognized through many awards, the latest being WEEK 25 Women in Leadership Award.


Rachael A. Parker

Rachael Parker was elected to the board to serve District 2 in April 2007. Rachael currently has two children attending Peoria Public Schools. Her daughter attends Peoria High School and her grandson is at Valeska Hinton Early Childhood Center. Rachael and her husband General are committed to reaching out to young people, motivating and encouraging them to know that they have the power to become whatever it is they want to be and that education is their ticket. Mrs. Parker is employed by the City of Peoria as a Development Specialist in the Department of Economic Development. She is also a small business owner with two home based businesses. She serves on the Committee of the Whole and the Building Committee as well as the Parent Teacher Advisory Committee. Mrs. Parker’s term expires in 2012.


Mary Spangler

Mrs. Spangler was elected to the Board from District 3 in 2004. Her four children are school-aged and attend Peoria Public Schools. She and her husband grew up on the south side of Chicago where she began teaching at a private school before coming to Peoria in 1989. She taught in District 150 at Von Steuben Middle School until her oldest son was born. She currently works as a fitness instructor at The Clubs at River City.  Mrs. Spangler serves on the Athletic Reorganization Committee and  on the District 150 Educational Foundation. Mrs. Spangler's term expires in 2009.


Jim Stowell

Mr. Stowell was elected to the Board to serve District 3 through 2011. A product of Whittier, Washington Gifted and Manual High School, Mr. Stowell is Senior Vice President-Investments for Robert W. Baird & Co. Inc. He also serves as Vice President for the Children’s Hospital Community Advisory Board, is a past President of the South-West Kiwanis, and has served on many committees within his church, First Federated. Mr. Stowell serves as Chairperson of the Building Committee and on the Committee of the Whole as well as the Community School Advisory Committee. Mr. Stowell and his wife, Jo, have two children currently enrolled in District 150 schools.


Debbie Wolfmeyer

Mrs. Wolfmeyer was elected to the Board from District 2 in 2006. Mrs. Wolfmeyer is a graduate of Peoria High School and she and her husband have two sons, both of whom graduated from Woodruff High School. Mrs. Wolfmeyer worked as a secretary in District #150 for 27 years before retiring in March of 2004. During her employment she was active in the clerical Union and was president for approximately ten years. As a Woodruff High School parent for eight years, Mrs. Wolfmeyer was an active member of the WHS Booster Club, serving as president for five years. Mrs. Wolfmeyer serves as Chairman of the Policy Committee. Mrs. Wolfmeyer's term expires in 2011.
