Parents as Leaders

NOW ACCEPTING PARENTS FOR THE 2014-2015 SCHOOL YEAR!

What is PALs?
PALs is a formal training program designed to deepen each District 150 parent participant’s knowledge in district operations, while exchanging ideas with staff, board members and State education officials.

The program is designed exclusively for parents of current District 150 students who want to obtain a foundation in district operations and governance and become more effective participants in school district affairs.

If you want to learn more about our school district, meet a wide variety of district officials, share information with your school community and get to know engaged parents from schools across the District, we hope you consider applying for the District’s PALs program. It’s a serious commitment of time, but we believe it’s an invaluable learning opportunity that allows each participant to become informed, plugged in and able to bring effective change to education!

What can I expect?
PALs meets each night of Parent University. The agenda is set for the 2014-2015 school year and can be found below. We ask each participant to commit to the entire program (7 meetings throughout the year), in which a guest speaker will discuss a different topic each night, including time for questions and dialogue. PALs provides participants the opportunity to dig into the bigger picture of the education process, with the intent that each person will be able to be better informed as they share what they have learned with his/her fellow PTO members, neighbors or community as a whole. Who knows? Participants may become the next school board member, education campaign leader, or go-to expert for a major need in education!
PALs begins with a special meet & greet event on August 21st for participants to begin meeting their cohort, as well as District leaders. At the end of the school year, each participant attending at least six meetings throughout the year will be presented with a congratulatory letter identifying them as “PALs Certified”.

When are the meetings?
Meetings are held as part of Parent University and are held at the same times and dates as each Parent University event. The format includes approximately 30 minutes of discussion with the Superintendent, starting at 5:30 p.m. each meeting. This segment is open to all Parent University participants and we hope this will encourage you to bring guests each night as we all open the evening together!

Following each Parent Forum segment, food will be available. Next, Parent University participants and other cohort groups will continue to their workshops or meetings for the evening.

During this same time, the PALs cohort will begin its meeting in its assigned location (approximately 6:05 p.m.). The meeting will last until 8:00 p.m., the same time Parent University dismisses for the evening.
