Each State has a slighly different definition of "gifted" and "talented," and Illinois' definition reads as follows:

Sec. 14A-20. Gifted and talented children means children and youth with outstanding talent who perform or show the potential for performing at remarkably high levels of accomplishment when compared with other children and youth of their age, experience, and environment. A child shall be considered gifted and talented in any area of aptitude, and, specifically, in language arts and mathematics, by scoring in the top 5% locally in that area of aptitude.  http://www.ilga.gov

  • National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC):  NAGC is the national gifted organization, based in Washington, D.C., and its website has a wealth of information and links.  They publish a magazine for parents, Parenting for High Potentialwww.nagc.org
  • Illinois Association for Gifted Children (IAGC):  This is the state chapter of NAGC, based in Palatine, IL, and it too has a wealth of information and links for you.  www.iagcgifted.org
