This week is Disability Awareness Week at Whittier Primary School. The students are going to learn about all types of people and the importance of respecting all people. During the week, the students will participate in an assembly from Easter Seals, special activities in the classroom, and hear about different disabilities during morning announcements. Please ask your children about the activities and what they are learning.
Each year, Peoria Public Schools families are provided the opportunity to apply for consideration of a special placement in a school other than the school(s) assigned to the family's home address. For the 2016/2017 school year, the following special placements are available: • Special Programs • Boundary Waivers • CHOICE Schools (program no longer available to new students, starting in 2016) • NCLB CHOICE Schools (program no longer available to new students, starting in 2014) Students and their families have had the opportunity to apply for a special program, including Fine Arts Magnet programs at Roosevelt (5th - 8th grades) and Peoria High School (9th - 12th grades), the gifted program at Washington Gifted Middle School, and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme at Richwoods High School. For these programs, students must be auditioned, tested and/or interviewed to be eligible. Students from the Criminal Justice Club at Illinois Central College donated holiday baskets and help students with various Easter crafts. Whittier students really enjoyed having ICC students share these fun activities with them as well as listening to future opportunities at ICC.
On Friday March 18, the Whittier Primary School Kindergarten teachers invited in their students and families for some family fun. The students brought in their families before school, showed off the classroom, had breakfast and did a craft with their family. There was a great turnout and enjoyable time for all involved.
Whittier Primary School is hosting a fundraiser for the LLS from 2/8/16-2/26/16. The event started with a kickoff assembly and honored one of our own students, who has battled Leukemia over the last few years. We have a goal of raising $1000 during the month. On Wednesday March 9, a finale assembly was held to reveal the total amount raised and other festivities.
On January 25, 2016, the Board of Education approved an update to Board Policy 7:100, requiring physical and immunization compliance by the first day of school. Students not in compliance by the first day of school (August 17, 2016), will not be allowed to start the school year until all health documentation requirements are met.
