The Von Steuben library has an improved, more user-friendly layout this year. The Magic Tree House and other early chapter books have been moved to a more accessible place and our shelves are more clearly labeled so students can find specific genres. This year we have a year-long quote game -- "Who's Line Is It Anyway?" -- to encourage students to explore the wonderful world of reading. We will be posting great quotes from favorite books and students must match the quote to the book and author. Please stop by and see if you know which quotes belong to which books.
Von Steuben is proud of Becky Donahue, winner of the Phares Excellence in Education Award. Becky is an amazing teacher who works with struggling students as well as challenging high ability learners. She also is a mentor to novice teachers, student teachers and first-year teachers. Mrs. Donahue teaches 5th grade science and social studies but her impact is felt throughout the building. We are excited to have her here and creating such a wonderful learning environment for our students.
AR-e you ready to read? Von Steuben students are! To encourage active participation in AR, Mr. Shoemaker is giving monthly prizes. Students completing a specific number of AR quizzes for the month will qualify for a raffle. Students began participating in August. The first raffle prize is an Origami Yoda book. A display in the library gives more information on AR.
Von Steuben students spent a day learning about PBIS and how to be true Viking. The PBIS team reviewed uniform policy, hallway behavior expectations, lunch room routines, and respectful restroom behavior. Each teacher taught students how to be a Viking in their individual classrooms and classroom routines. Each student received a Student & Parent Handbook to be signed by their parent. With the Viking PBIS rules clearly explained, students can now earn PBIS incentive Viking Vouchers. The race is on to see which homeroom earns 25 Viking helmets for the first free uniform day!
